           Twiceoverintheearlypartofthecentury,AmsterdamIslandbecamethecountryofdesertedsailors,providentiallysavedfrommiseryanddeath;butsincetheseeventsnovesselhadbeenlostonitscoast.Hadanyshipwreckoccurred,somefragmentsmusthavebeenthrownonthesandyshore,andanypoorsufferersfromitwouldhavefoundtheirwaytoM.Viot’sfishing-huts.Theoldmanhadbeenlongontheisland,andhadneverbeencalledupontoexercisesuchhospitality.OftheBritanniaandCaptainGrantheknewnothing,buthewascertainthatthedisasterhadnothappenedonAmsterdamIsland,norontheisletcalledSt.Paul,forwhalersandfishing-vesselswentthereconstantly,andmusthaveheardofit.

           Glenarvanwasneithersurprisednorvexedatthereply;indeed,hisobjectinaskingwasrathertoestablishthefactthatCaptainGranthadnotbeentherethanthathehad.Thisdone,theywerereadytoproceedontheirvoyagenextday.
