           LordGlenarvandidnotforgetthathiswifewasthedaughterofagreattraveler,andhethoughtitlikelythatshewouldinheritherfather’spredilections.HehadtheDuncanbuiltexpresslythathemighttakehisbridetothemostbeautifullandsintheworld,andcompletetheirhoneymoonbysailinguptheMediterranean,andthroughtheclusteringislandsoftheArchipelago.

           However,LordGlenarvanhadgonenowtoLondon.Thelivesoftheshipwreckedmenwereatstake,andLadyHelenawastoomuchconcernedherselfaboutthemtogrudgeherhusband’stemporaryabsence.Atelegramnextdaygavehopeofhisspeedyreturn,butintheeveningaletterapprisedherofthedifficultieshispropositionhadmetwith,andthemorningafterbroughtanother,inwhichheopenlyexpressedhisdissatisfactionwiththeAdmiralty.

           LadyHelenabegantogetanxiousasthedayworeon.Intheevening,whenshewassittingaloneinherroom,Mr.Halbert,thehousesteward,cameinandaskedifshewouldseeayounggirlandboythatwantedtospeaktoLordGlenarvan.

           "Someofthecountrypeople?"askedLadyHelena.

           "No,madame,"repliedthesteward,"Idonotknowthematall.TheycamebyrailtoBalloch,andwalkedtherestofthewaytoLuss."

           "Tellthemtocomeup,Halbert."

           Inafewminutesagirlandboywereshownin.Theywereevidentlybrotherandsister,fortheresemblancewasunmistakable.Thegirlwasaboutsixteenyearsofage;hertiredprettyface,andsorrowfuleyes,andresignedbutcourageouslook,aswellasherneatthoughpoorattire,madeafavorableimpression.
