           ThereplywasnosoonertranslatedthanthePatagonianfoundhimselfsurroundedbythesevenmenquestioninghimwitheagerglances.Paganelwassoexcited,hecouldhardlyfindwords,andhegazedatthegraveIndianasifhecouldreadthereplyonhislips.

           EachwordspokenbyThalcavewasinstantlytranslated,sothatthewholepartyseemedtohearhimspeakintheirmothertongue.

           "Andwhatabouttheprisoner?"askedPaganel.

           "Hewasaforeigner."

           "Youhaveseenhim?"

           "No;butIhaveheardtheIndianspeakofhim.Heisbrave;hehastheheartofabull."

           "Theheartofabull!"saidPaganel."Ah,thismagnificentPatagonianlanguage.Youunderstandhim,myfriends,hemeansacourageousman."

           "Myfather!"exclaimedRobertGrant,and,turningtoPaganel,heaskedwhattheSpanishwasfor,"Isitmyfather."

           "Esmiopadre,"repliedthegeographer.

           ImmediatelytakingThalcave’shandsinhisown,theboysaid,inasofttone:

           "Esmiopadre."

           "Suopadre,"repliedthePatagonian,hisfacelightingup.
