           Whatcouldbegoingonthere?Suddenlyafuriousavalanchecamedown,anavalancheoflivinganimalsmadwithfear.Thewholeplateauseemedtotremble.Therewerehundreds,perhapsthousands,oftheseanimals,andinspiteoftherarefiedatmosphere,theirnoisewasdeafening.WeretheywildbeastsfromthePampas,orherdsofllamasandvicunas?Glenarvan,McNabbs,Robert,Austin,andthetwosailors,hadjusttimetothrowthemselvesflatonthegroundbeforetheysweptpastlikeawhirlwind,onlyafewpacesdistant.Paganel,whohadremainedstanding,totakeadvantageofhispeculiarpowersofsight,wasknockeddowninatwinkling.Atthesamemomentthereportoffirearmswasheard.TheMajorhadfired,anditseemedtohimthatananimalhadfallencloseby,andthatthewholeherd,yellinglouderthanever,hadrusheddownanddisappearedamongthedeclivitieslightedupbythereflectionofthevolcano.

           "Ah,I’vegotthem,"saidavoice,thevoiceofPaganel.

           "Gotwhat?"askedGlenarvan.

           "Myspectacles,"wasthereply."Onemightexpecttolosethatmuchinsuchatumultasthis."

           "Youarenotwounded,Ihope?"
