           ’Ishallmakehim,’repliedTony;nowondershewasproudofhim.

           Buttheyshouldnothavetalkedsoloudly,foronedaytheywereoverheardbyafairywhohadbeengatheringskeletonleaves,fromwhichthelittlepeopleweavetheirsummercurtains,andafterthatTonywasamarkedboy.Theyloosenedtherailsbeforehesatonthem,sothatdownhecameonthebackofhishead;theytrippedhimupbycatchinghisbootlace,andbribedtheduckstosinkhisboat.NearlyallthenastyaccidentsyoumeetwithintheGardensoccurbecausethefairieshavetakenanill-willtoyou,andsoitbehovesyoutobecarefulwhatyousayaboutthem.

           Maimiewasoneofthekindwholiketofixadayfordoingthings,butTonywasnotthatkind,andwhensheaskedhimwhichdayhewastoremainbehindintheGardensafterLock-outhemerelyreplied,’Justsomeday’;hewasquitevagueaboutwhichdayexceptwhensheasked,’Willitbeto-day?’andthenhecouldalwayssayforcertainthatitwouldnotbeto-day.Soshesawthathewaswaitingforarealgoodchance.

           ThisbringsustoanafternoonwhentheGardenswerewhitewithsnow,andtherewasiceontheRoundPond;notthickenoughtoskateon,butatleastyoucouldspoilitforto-morrowbyflingingstones,andmanybrightlittleboysandgirlsweredoingthat.

           WhenTonyandhissisterarrivedtheywantedtogostraighttothepond,buttheirayahsaidtheymusttakeasharpwalkfirst,andasshesaidthissheglancedatthetime-boardtoseewhentheGardensclosedthatnight.Itreadhalf-pastfive.Poorayah!sheistheonewholaughscontinuouslybecausetherearesomanywhitechildrenintheworld,butshewasnottolaughmuchmorethatday.
