           NorwasthisallthatPeterdidtogainthepowerfuloldfellow’sgood-will.YoumustknowthatSolomonhadnointentionofremaininginofficeallhislife.Helookedforwardtoretiringbyandby,anddevotinghisgreenoldagetoalifeofpleasureonacertainyew-stumpintheFigswhichhadtakenhisfancy,andforyearshehadbeenquietlyfillinghisstocking.Itwasastockingbelongingtosomebathingpersonwhichhadbeencastupontheisland,andatthetimeIspeakofitcontainedahundredandeightycrumbs,thirty-fournuts,sixteencrusts,apen-wiper,andaboot-lace.Whenhisstockingwasfull,Solomoncalculatedthathewouldbeabletoretireonacompetency.Peternowgavehimapound.Hecutitoffhisbank-notewithasharpstick.

           ThismadeSolomonhisfriendforever,andafterthetwohadconsultedtogethertheycalledameetingofthethrushes.Youwillseepresentlywhythrushesonlywereinvited.

           TheschemetobeputbeforethemwasreallyPeter’s,butSolomondidmostofthetalking,becausehesoonbecameirritableifotherpeopletalked.Hebeganbysayingthathehadbeenmuchimpressedbythesuperioringenuityshownbythethrushesinnest-building,andthisputthemintogood-humouratonce,asitwasmeanttodo;forallthequarrelsbetweenbirdsareaboutthebestwayofbuildingnests.
