           OncehereallythoughthehaddiscoveredawayofreachingtheGardens.Awonderfulwhitething,likearunawaynewspaper,floatedhighovertheislandandthentumbled,rollingoverandoverafterthemannerofabirdthathasbrokenitswing.Peterwassofrightenedthathehid,butthebirdstoldhimitwasonlyakite,andwhatakiteis,andthatitmusthavetuggeditsstringoutofaboy’shand,andsoaredaway.AfterthattheylaughedatPeterforbeingsofondofthekite;heloveditsomuchthatheevensleptwithonehandonit,andIthinkthiswaspatheticandpretty,forthereasonheloveditwasbecauseithadbelongedtoarealboy.

           Tothebirdsthiswasaverypoorreason,buttheolderonesfeltgratefultohimatthistimebecausehehadnursedanumberoffledglingsthroughtheGermanmeasles,andtheyofferedtoshowhimhowbirdsflyakite.Sosixofthemtooktheendofthestringintheirbeaksandflewawaywithit;andtohisamazementitflewafterthemandwentevenhigherthanthey.

           Peterscreamedout,’Doitagain!’andwithgreatgood-naturetheydiditseveraltimes,andalwaysinsteadofthankingthemhecried,’Doitagain!’whichshowsthatevennowhehadnotquiteforgottenwhatitwastobeaboy.

           Atlast,withagranddesignburningwithinhisbraveheart,hebeggedthemtodoitoncemorewithhimclingingtothetail,andnowahundredflewoffwiththestring,andPeterclungtothetail,meaningtodropoffwhenhewasovertheGardens.
