           ToPeter’sbewildermenthediscoveredthateveryfairyhemetfledfromhim.Abandofworkmen,whoweresawingdownatoadstool,rushedaway,leavingtheirtoolsbehindthem.Amilkmaidturnedherpailupsidedownandhidinit.SoontheGardenswereinanuproar.Crowdsoffairieswererunningthiswayandthat,askingeachotherstoutlywhowasafraid;lightswereextinguished,doorsbarricaded,andfromthegroundsofQueenMab’spalacecametherub-a-dubofdrums,showingthattheroyalguardhadbeencalledout.AregimentofLancerscamechargingdowntheBroadWalk,armedwithholly-leaves,withwhichtheyjagtheenemyhorriblyinpassing.PeterheardthelittlepeoplecryingeverywherethattherewasahumanintheGardensafterLock-outTime,butheneverthoughtforamomentthathewasthehuman.Hewasfeelingstuffierandstuffier,andmoreandmorewistfultolearnwhathewanteddonetohisnose,buthepursuedthemwiththevitalquestioninvain;thetimidcreaturesranfromhim,andeventheLancers,whenheapproachedthemuptheHump,turnedswiftlyintoaside-walk,onthepretencethattheysawhimthere.
