           Mrs.Phillipswasalwaysgladtoseehernieces; andthetwoeldest,fromtheirrecentabsence,wereparticularlywelcome,andshewaseagerlyexpressinghersurpriseattheirsuddenreturnhome,which,astheirowncarriagehadnotfetchedthem,sheshouldhaveknownnothingabout,ifshehadnothappenedtoseeMr.Jones’sshop-boyinthestreet,whohadtoldherthattheywerenottosendanymoredraughtstoNetherfieldbecausetheMissBennetswerecomeaway,whenhercivilitywasclaimedtowardsMr.CollinsbyJane’sintroductionofhim. Shereceivedhimwithherverybestpoliteness,whichhereturnedwithasmuchmore,apologisingforhisintrusion,withoutanypreviousacquaintancewithher,whichhecouldnothelpflatteringhimself,however,mightbejustifiedbyhisrelationshiptotheyoungladieswhointroducedhimtohernotice. Mrs.Phillipswasquiteawedbysuchanexcessofgoodbreeding; buthercontemplationofonestrangerwassoonputtoanendbyexclamationsandinquiriesabouttheother;ofwhom,however,shecouldonlytellhernieceswhattheyalreadyknew,thatMr.DennyhadbroughthimfromLondon,andthathewastohavealieutenant’scommissionintheshire. Shehadbeenwatchinghimthelasthour,shesaid,ashewalkedupanddownthestreet,andhadMr.Wickhamappeared,KittyandLydiawouldcertainlyhavecontinuedtheoccupation, butunluckilynoonepassedwindowsnowexceptafewoftheofficers,who,incomparisonwiththestranger,werebecome"stupid,disagreeablefellows." SomeofthemweretodinewiththePhillipsesthenextday,andtheirauntpromisedtomakeherhusbandcallonMr.Wickham,andgivehimaninvitationalso,ifthefamilyfromLongbournwouldcomeintheevening.
