Elizabethwasatnolosstounderstandfromwhencethisdeferencetoherauthorityproceeded; butitwasnotinherpowertogiveanyinformationofsosatisfactoryanatureasthecomplimentdeserved. Shehadneverheardofhishavinghadanyrelations,exceptafatherandmother,bothofwhomhadbeendeadmanyyears. Itwaspossible,however,thatsomeofhiscompanionsinthe——shiremightbeabletogivemoreinformation; andthoughshewasnotverysanguineinexpectingit,theapplicationwasasomethingtolookforwardto.
EverydayatLongbournwasnowadayofanxiety; butthemostanxiouspartofeachwaswhenthepostwasexpected. Thearrivalofletterswasthegrandobjectofeverymorning’simpatience. Throughletters,whateverofgoodorbadwastobetoldwouldbecommunicated,andeverysucceedingdaywasexpectedtobringsomenewsofimportance.
ButbeforetheyheardagainfromMr.Gardiner,aletterarrivedfortheirfather,fromadifferentquarter,fromMr.Collins; which,asJanehadreceiveddirectionstoopenallthatcameforhiminhisabsence,sheaccordinglyread; andElizabeth,whoknewwhatcuriositieshislettersalwayswere,lookedoverher,andreaditlikewise. Itwasasfollows:
