           ElizabethsoonsawthatshewasherselfcloselywatchedbyMissBingley,andthatshecouldnotspeakaword,especiallytoMissDarcy,withoutcallingherattention. Thisobservationwouldnothavepreventedherfromtryingtotalktothelatter,hadtheynotbeenseatedataninconvenientdistance;butshewasnotsorrytobesparedthenecessityofsayingmuch.Herownthoughtswereemployingher. Sheexpectedeverymomentthatsomeofthegentlemenwouldentertheroom. Shewished,shefearedthatthemasterofthehousemightbeamongstthem;andwhethershewishedorfeareditmost,shecouldscarcelydetermine. AftersittinginthismanneraquarterofanhourwithouthearingMissBingley’svoice,Elizabethwasrousedbyreceivingfromheracoldinquiryafterthehealthofherfamily. Sheansweredwithequalindifferenceandbrevity,andtheotherssaidnomore. 

           Thenextvariationwhichtheirvisitaffordedwasproducedbytheentranceofservantswithcoldmeat,cake,andavarietyofallthefinestfruitsinseason; butthisdidnottakeplacetillaftermanyasignificantlookandsmilefromMrs.AnnesleytoMissDarcyhadbeengiven,toremindherofherpost. Therewasnowemploymentforthewholepartyforthoughtheycouldnotalltalk,theycouldalleat; andthebeautifulpyramidsofgrapes,nectarines,andpeachessooncollectedthemroundthetable. 

           Whilethusengaged,ElizabethhadafairopportunityofdecidingwhethershemostfearedorwishedfortheappearanceofMr.Darcy,bythefeelingswhichprevailedonhisenteringtheroom;andthen,thoughbutamomentbeforeshehadbelievedherwishestopredominate,shebegantoregretthathecame. 

           HehadbeensometimewithMr.Gardiner,who,withtwoorthreeothergentlemenfromthehouse,wasengagedbytheriver,andhadlefthimonlyonlearningthattheladiesofthefamilyintendedavisittoGeorgianathatmorning.
