           Elizabethexcusedherselfaswellasshecould;saidthatshehadlikedhimbetterwhentheyhadmetinKentthanbefore,andthatshehadneverseenhimsopleasantasthismorning. 

           "Butperhapshemaybealittlewhimsicalinhiscivilities,"repliedheruncle. "Yourgreatmenoftenare;andthereforeIshallnottakehimathisword,ashemightchangehismindanotherday,andwarnmeoffhisgrounds." 

           Elizabethfeltthattheyhadentirelymisunderstoodhischaracter,butsaidnothing.

           ElizabethherefeltherselfcalledontosaysomethinginvindicationofhisbehaviourtoWickham; andthereforegavethemtounderstand,inasguardedamannerasshecould,thatbywhatshehadheardfromhisrelationsinKent,hisactionswerecapableofaverydifferentconstruction; andthathischaracterwasbynomeanssofaulty,norWickham’ssoamiable,astheyhadbeenconsideredinHertfordshire.
