           Hepausedinhopesofananswer; buthiscompanionwasnotdisposedtomakeany; andElizabethatthatinstantmovingtowardsthem,hewasstruckwiththeactionofdoingaverygallantthing,andcalledouttoher: 

           "MydearMissEliza,whyareyounotdancing? Mr.Darcy,youmustallowmetopresentthisyoungladytoyouasaverydesirablepartner. Youcannotrefusetodance,Iamsurewhensomuchbeautyisbeforeyou." And,takingherhand,hewouldhavegivenittoMr.Darcywho,thoughextremelysurprised,wasnotunwillingtoreceiveit,whensheinstantlydrewback,andsaidwithsomediscomposuretoSirWilliam: 

           "Indeed,sir,Ihavenottheleastintentionofdancing. IentreatyounottosupposethatImovedthiswayinordertobegforapartner." 

           Mr.Darcy,withgravepropriety,requestedtobeallowedthehonourofherhand,butinvain. Elizabethwasdetermined;nordidSirWilliamatallshakeherpurposebyhisattemptatpersuasion. 

           "Youexcelsomuchinthedance,MissEliza,thatitiscrueltodenymethehappinessofseeingyou; andthoughthisgentlemandislikestheamusementingeneral,hecanhavenoobjection,Iamsure,toobligeusforonehalf-hour." 

           "Mr.Darcyisallpoliteness,"saidElizabeth,smiling.
