           ShefeltanewthejusticeofMr.Darcy’sobjections; andneverhadshebeensomuchdisposedtopardonhisinterferenceintheviewsofhisfriend. 

           ButthegloomofLydia’sprospectwasshortlyclearedaway;forshereceivedaninvitationfromMrs.Forster,thewifeofthecoloneloftheregiment,toaccompanyhertoBrighton. Thisinvaluablefriendwasaveryyoungwoman,andverylatelymarried. AresemblanceingoodhumourandgoodspiritshadrecommendedherandLydiatoeachother,andoutoftheirthreemonths’acquaintancetheyhadbeenintimatetwo. 

           TheraptureofLydiaonthisoccasion,heradorationofMrs.Forster,thedelightofMrs.Bennet,andthemortificationofKitty,arescarcelytobedescribed. Whollyinattentivetohersister’sfeelings,Lydiaflewaboutthehouseinrestlessecstasy,callingforeveryone’scongratulations,andlaughingandtalkingwithmoreviolencethanever; whilstthelucklessKittycontinuedintheparlourrepinedatherfateintermsasunreasonableasheraccentwaspeevish.

           InvaindidElizabethattempttomakeherreasonable,andJanetomakeherresigned. AsforElizabethherself,thisinvitationwassofarfromexcitinginherthesamefeelingsasinhermotherandLydia,thatsheconsidereditasthedeathwarrantofallpossibilityofcommonsenseforthelatter; anddetestableassuchastepmustmakeherwereitknown,shecouldnothelpsecretlyadvisingherfathernottolethergo.
