Iratherwished,thanbelievedhimtobesincere;but,atanyrate,wasperfectlyreadytoaccedetohisproposal. IknewthatMr.Wickhamoughtnottobeaclergyman;thebusinesswasthereforesoonsettled—heresignedallclaimtoassistanceinthechurch,wereitpossiblethathecouldeverbeinasituationtoreceiveit,andacceptedinreturnthreethousandpounds. Youwillhardlyblamemeforrefusingtocomplywiththisentreaty,orforresistingeveryrepetitiontoit. Hisresentmentwasinproportiontothedistressofhiscircumstances—andhewasdoubtlessasviolentinhisabuseofmetoothersasinhisreproachestomyself. Afterthisperiodeveryappearanceofacquaintancewasdropped.
