Iwritewithoutanyintentionofpainingyou,orhumblingmyself,bydwellingonwisheswhich,forthehappinessofboth,cannotbetoosoonforgotten; andtheeffortwhichtheformationandtheperusalofthislettermustoccasion,shouldhavebeenspared,hadnotmycharacterrequiredittobewrittenandread. Youmust,therefore,pardonthefreedomwithwhichIdemandyourattention; yourfeelings,Iknow,willbestowitunwillingly,butIdemanditofyourjustice.

Butfromtheseverityofthatblamewhichwaslastnightsoliberallybestowed,respectingeachcircumstance,Ishallhopetobeinthefuturesecured,whenthefollowingaccountofmyactionsandtheirmotiveshasbeenread.
