           Herladyship,withgreatcondescension,arosetoreceivethem;andasMrs.Collinshadsettleditwithherhusbandthattheofficeofintroductionshouldbehers,itwasperformedinapropermanner,withoutanyofthoseapologiesandthankswhichhewouldhavethoughtnecessary. 

           InspiteofhavingbeenatSt.James’sSirWilliamwassocompletelyawedbythegrandeursurroundinghim,thathehadbutjustcourageenoughtomakeaverylowbow,andtakehisseatwithoutsayingaword; andhisdaughter,frightenedalmostoutofhersenses,satontheedgeofherchair,notknowingwhichwaytolook. Elizabethfoundherselfquiteequaltothescene,andcouldobservethethreeladiesbeforehercomposedly. LadyCatherinewasatall,largewoman,withstrongly-markedfeatures,whichmightoncehavebeenhandsome. Herairwasnotconciliating,norwashermannerofreceivingthemsuchastomakehervisitorsforgettheirinferiorrank. Shewasnotrenderedformidablebysilence;butwhatevershesaidwasspokeninsoauthoritativeatone,asmarkedherself-importance,andbroughtMr.WickhamimmediatelytoElizabeth’smind; andfromtheobservationofthedayaltogether,shebelievedLadyCatherinetobeexactlywhatherepresented. 

           When,afterexaminingthemother,inwhosecountenanceanddeportmentshesoonfoundsomeresemblanceofMr.Darcy,sheturnedhereyesonthedaughter,shecouldalmosthavejoinedinMaria’sastonishmentatherbeingsothinandsosmall. Therewasneitherinfigurenorfaceanylikenessbetweentheladies. MissdeBourghwaspaleandsickly; herfeatures,thoughnotplain,wereinsignificant; andshespokeverylittle,exceptinalowvoice,toMrs.Jenkinson,inwhoseappearancetherewasnothingremarkable,andwhowasentirelyengagedinlisteningtowhatshesaid,andplacingascreenintheproperdirectionbeforehereyes.
