           Mr.Bingleyinheritedpropertytotheamountofnearlyahundredthousandpoundsfromhisfather,whohadintendedtopurchaseanestate,butdidnotlivetodoit. Mr.Bingleyintendeditlikewise,andsometimesmadechoiceofhiscounty; butashewasnowprovidedwithagoodhouseandthelibertyofamanor,itwasdoubtfultomanyofthosewhobestknewtheeasinessofhistemper,whetherhemightnotspendtheremainderofhisdaysatNetherfield,andleavethenextgenerationtopurchase.

           BetweenhimandDarcytherewasaverysteadyfriendship,inspiteofgreatoppositionofcharacter. BingleywasendearedtoDarcybytheeasiness,openness,andductilityofhistemper,thoughnodispositioncouldofferagreatercontrasttohisown,andthoughwithhisownheneverappeareddissatisfied. OnthestrengthofDarcy’sregard,Bingleyhadthefirmestreliance,andofhisjudgementthehighestopinion. Inunderstanding,Darcywasthesuperior. Bingleywasbynomeansdeficient,butDarcywasclever. Hewasatthesametimehaughty,reserved,andfastidious,andhismanners,thoughwell-bred,werenotinviting.
