           Hisowncharacterbeinglight,profligate,andperfidious,Johneasilyattachedtohispersonandfaction,notonlyallwhohadreasontodreadtheresentmentofRichardforcriminalproceedingsduringhisabsence,butalsothenumerousclassof"lawlessresolutes,"whomthecrusadeshadturnedbackontheircountry,accomplishedinthevicesoftheEast,impoverishedinsubstance,andhardenedincharacter,andwhoplacedtheirhopesofharvestincivilcommotion.Tothesecausesofpublicdistressandapprehension,mustbeadded,themultitudeofoutlaws,who,driventodespairbytheoppressionofthefeudalnobility,andthesevereexerciseoftheforestlaws,bandedtogetherinlargegangs,and,keepingpossessionoftheforestsandthewastes,setatdefiancethejusticeandmagistracyofthecountry.Thenoblesthemselves,eachfortifiedwithinhisowncastle,andplayingthepettysovereignoverhisowndominions,weretheleadersofbandsscarcelesslawlessandoppressivethanthoseoftheavoweddepredators.Tomaintaintheseretainers,andtosupporttheextravaganceandmagnificencewhichtheirprideinducedthemtoaffect,thenobilityborrowedsumsofmoneyfromtheJewsatthemostusuriousinterest,whichgnawedintotheirestateslikeconsumingcankers,scarcetobecuredunlesswhencircumstancesgavethemanopportunityofgettingfree,byexercisingupontheircreditorssomeactofunprincipledviolence.
