ThisstateofthingsIhavethoughtitnecessarytopremisefortheinformationofthegeneralreader,whomightbeapttoforget,that,althoughnogreathistoricalevents,suchaswarorinsurrection,marktheexistenceoftheAnglo-SaxonsasaseparatepeoplesubsequenttothereignofWilliamtheSecond;yetthegreatnationaldistinctionsbetwixtthemandtheirconquerors,therecollectionofwhattheyhadformerlybeen,andtowhattheywerenowreduced,continueddowntothereignofEdwardtheThird,tokeepopenthewoundswhichtheConquesthadinflicted,andtomaintainalineofseparationbetwixtthedescendantsofthevictorNormansandthevanquishedSaxons.
Thesunwassettingupononeoftherichgrassygladesofthatforest,whichwehavementionedinthebeginningofthechapter.Hundredsofbroad-headed,short-stemmed,wide-branchedoaks,whichhadwitnessedperhapsthestatelymarchoftheRomansoldiery,flungtheirgnarledarmsoverathickcarpetofthemostdeliciousgreensward;insomeplacestheywereintermingledwithbeeches,hollies,andcopsewoodofvariousdescriptions,socloselyastotallytointerceptthelevelbeamsofthesinkingsun;inotherstheyrecededfromeachother,formingthoselongsweepingvistas,intheintricacyofwhichtheeyedelightstoloseitself,whileimaginationconsidersthemasthepathstoyetwilderscenesofsilvansolitude.
