Meantimetheprisonersfoundnodifficultyinmakingtheirescapeintotheanteroom,andfromthenceintothecourtofthecastle,whichwasnowthelastsceneofcontest.HeresatthefierceTemplar,mountedonhorseback,surroundedbyseveralofthegarrisonbothonhorseandfoot,whohadunitedtheirstrengthtothatofthisrenownedleader,inordertosecurethelastchanceofsafetyandretreatwhichremainedtothem.Thedrawbridgehadbeenloweredbyhisorders,butthepassagewasbeset;forthearchers,whohadhithertoonlyannoyedthecastleonthatsidebytheirmissiles,nosoonersawtheflamesbreakingout,andthebridgelowered,thantheythrongedtotheentrance,aswelltopreventtheescapeofthegarrison,astosecuretheirownshareofbootyerethecastleshouldbeburntdown.Ontheotherhand,apartyofthebesiegerswhohadenteredbytheposternwerenowissuingoutintothecourt-yard,andattackingwithfurytheremnantofthedefenderswhowerethusassaultedonbothsidesatonce.
