ButIvanhoewastoogoodaCatholictoretainthesameclassoffeelingstowardsaJewess.ThisRebeccahadforeseen,andforthisverypurposeshehadhastenedtomentionherfather’snameandlineage;yet—forthefairandwisedaughterofIsaacwasnotwithoutatouchoffemaleweakness—shecouldnotbutsighinternallywhentheglanceofrespectfuladmiration,notaltogetherunmixedwithtenderness,withwhichIvanhoehadhithertoregardedhisunknownbenefactress,wasexchangedatonceforamannercold,composed,andcollected,andfraughtwithnodeeperfeelingthanthatwhichexpressedagratefulsenseofcourtesyreceivedfromanunexpectedquarter,andfromoneofaninferiorrace.ItwasnotthatIvanhoe’sformercarriageexpressedmorethanthatgeneraldevotionalhomagewhichyouthalwayspaystobeauty;yetitwasmortifyingthatonewordshouldoperateasaspelltoremovepoorRebecca,whocouldnotbesupposedaltogetherignorantofhertitletosuchhomage,intoadegradedclass,towhomitcouldnotbehonourablyrendered.
ButthegentlenessandcandourofRebecca’snatureimputednofaulttoIvanhoeforsharingintheuniversalprejudicesofhisageandreligion.OnthecontrarythefairJewess,thoughsensibleherpatientnowregardedherasoneofaraceofreprobation,withwhomitwasdisgracefultoholdanybeyondthemostnecessaryintercourse,ceasednottopaythesamepatientanddevotedattentiontohissafetyandconvalescence.
