           Forthispurpose,atablerichlycoveredwithscarletclothwasplacedtransverselyacrosstheplatform,fromthemiddleofwhichranthelongerandlowerboard,atwhichthedomesticsandinferiorpersonsfed,downtowardsthebottomofthehall.ThewholeresembledtheformoftheletterT,orsomeofthoseancientdinner-tables,which,arrangedonthesameprinciples,maybestillseenintheantiqueCollegesofOxfordorCambridge.Massivechairsandsettlesofcarvedoakwereplaceduponthedais,andovertheseseatsandthemoreelevatedtablewasfastenedacanopyofcloth,whichservedinsomedegreetoprotectthedignitarieswhooccupiedthatdistinguishedstationfromtheweather,andespeciallyfromtherain,whichinsomeplacesfounditswaythroughtheill-constructedroof.

           Thewallsofthisupperendofthehall,asfarasthedaisextended,werecoveredwithhangingsorcurtains,anduponthefloortherewasacarpet,bothofwhichwereadornedwithsomeattemptsattapestry,orembroidery,executedwithbrilliantorrathergaudycolouring.Overthelowerrangeoftable,theroof,aswehavenoticed,hadnocovering;theroughplasteredwallswereleftbare,andtherudeearthenfloorwasuncarpeted;theboardwasuncoveredbyacloth,andrudemassivebenchessuppliedtheplaceofchairs.

           Inthecentreoftheuppertable,wereplacedtwochairsmoreelevatedthantherest,forthemasterandmistressofthefamily,whopresidedoverthesceneofhospitality,andfromdoingsoderivedtheirSaxontitleofhonour,whichsignifies"theDividersofBread."
