Thenobles,whosepowerhadbecomeexorbitantduringthereignofStephen,andwhomtheprudenceofHenrytheSecondhadscarcereducedtosomedegreeofsubjectiontothecrown,hadnowresumedtheirancientlicenseinitsutmostextent;despisingthefeebleinterferenceoftheEnglishCouncilofState,fortifyingtheircastles,increasingthenumberoftheirdependants,reducingallaroundthemtoastateofvassalage,andstrivingbyeverymeansintheirpower,toplacethemselveseachattheheadofsuchforcesasmightenablehimtomakeafigureinthenationalconvulsionswhichappearedtobeimpending.
Thesituationoftheinferiorgentry,orFranklins,astheywerecalled,who,bythelawandspiritoftheEnglishconstitution,wereentitledtoholdthemselvesindependentoffeudaltyranny,becamenowunusuallyprecarious.If,aswasmostgenerallythecase,theyplacedthemselvesundertheprotectionofanyofthepettykingsintheirvicinity,acceptedoffeudalofficesinhishousehold,orboundthemselvesbymutualtreatiesofallianceandprotection,tosupporthiminhisenterprises,theymightindeedpurchasetemporaryrepose;butitmustbewiththesacrificeofthatindependencewhichwassodeartoeveryEnglishbosom,andatthecertainhazardofbeinginvolvedasapartyinwhateverrashexpeditiontheambitionoftheirprotectormightleadhimtoundertake.
