           AsItookholdofthehandleofthedoorIheardanexclamation,oddlytruncatedattheend,andaclickandathud. AgustofairwhirledroundmeasIopenedthedoor,andfromwithincamethesoundofbrokenglassfallingonthefloor. TheTimeTravellerwasnotthere. Iseemedtoseeaghostly,indistinctfiguresittinginawhirlingmassofblackandbrassforamomentafiguresotransparentthatthebenchbehindwithitssheetsofdrawingswasabsolutelydistinct; butthisphantasmvanishedasIrubbedmyeyes. TheTimeMachinehadgone. Saveforasubsidingstirofdust,thefurtherendofthelaboratorywasempty. Apaneoftheskylighthad,apparently,justbeenblownin. 

           Ifeltanunreasonableamazement. Iknewthatsomethingstrangehadhappened,andforthemomentcouldnotdistinguishwhatthestrangethingmightbe. AsIstoodstaring,thedoorintothegardenopened,andtheman-servantappeared. 

           Welookedateachother. Thenideasbegantocome. ‘HasMr.goneoutthatway?’saidI. 

           ‘No,sir.Noonehascomeoutthisway. Iwasexpectingtofindhimhere.’
