“Thouliest,falserecreant,”criedSirGawain,fiercely.
AtthatSirLancelotwaswroth,andsaid,“Iwellseethouartnowmineenemy,andthattherecanbenomorepeacewiththee,orwithmylordtheking,elsewouldIgladlygivebackthequeen.”
ThenthekingwouldfainhavelistenedtoSirLancelot,formorethanallhisownwrongdidhegrieveatthesorewasteanddamageoftherealm,butSirGawainpersuadedhimagainstit,andevercriedoutfoullyonSirLancelot.
WhenSirBorsandtheotherknightsofLancelot’spartyheardthefiercewordsofSirGawain,theywerepassingwroth,andprayedtorideforthandbeavengedonhim,fortheywerewearyofsolongwaitingtonogood.AndintheendSirLancelot,withaheavyheart,consented.
Soonthemorrowthehostsoneithersidemetinthefield,andtherewasagreatbattle.AndSirGawainprayedhisknightschieflytosetuponSirLancelot;butSirLancelotcommandedhiscompanytoforbearKingArthurandSirGawain.
Sothetwoarmiesjoustedtogetherrightfiercely,andSirGawainprofferedtoencounterwithSirLionel,andoverthrewhim.ButSirBors,andSirBlamor,andSirPalomedes,whowereonSirLancelot’sside,didgreatfeatsofarms,andoverthrewmanyofKingArthur’sknights.
