ThenSirGawainprayedleavetogoandseekthatknight,whichthekinggladlygavehim.SoforthwithhemountedandrodemanyleaguesroundCamelot,butcouldhearnotidings.
WithintwodaysthereafterKingArthurandhisknightsreturnedfromCamelot,andSirGawainchancedtolodgeatAstolat,inthehouseofSirBernard.AndtherecameinthefairElainetohim,andprayedhimnewsofthetournament,andwhowontheprize.“Aknightwithawhiteshield,”saidhe,“whobarearedsleeveinhishelm,smotedownallcomersandwontheday.”
AtthatthevisageofElainechangedsuddenlyfromwhitetored,andheartilyshethankedourLady.
ThensaidSirGawain,“Knowyethatknight?”andurgedhertillshetoldhimthatitwashersleevehewore.
