AssoonasSirPalomedessawhimheranathimwithagreatspearinrest,butSirTristramwasready,andatthefirstencounterhurledhimtotheground.Thentherearoseagreatcrythattheknightwiththeblackshieldwasoverthrown.AndPalomedessorelyhurtandshamed,soughtoutasecretwayandwouldhaveleftthefield;butTristramwatchedhim,androdeafterhim,andbadehimstay,forhehadnotyetdonewithhim.ThendidSirPalomedesturnwithfury,andlashatSirTristramwithhissword;butatthefirststrokeSirTristramsmotehimtotheearth,andcried,“Donowallmycommands,ortakethydeath.”ThenheyieldedtoSirTristram’smercy,andpromisedtoforsakeLaBelleIsault,andfortwelvemonthstowearnoarmsorarmour.Andrisingup,hecuthisarmouroffhimintoshredswithrageandmadness,andturnedandleftthefield:andSirTristramalsoleftthelists,androdebacktothecastlethroughtheposterngate.
ThenwasSirTristramlongcherishedbytheKingandQueenofIreland,andeverwithLaBelleIsault.
