           ButSirMarhausanswerednothing,andsorelygroaningfledaway.

           “Farewell,Sirknight,farewell,”laughedTristram,whoseownvoicenowwashoarseandfaintwithlossofblood;“Ihavethyswordandshieldinmysafekeeping,andwillweartheminallplaceswhereIrideonmyadventures,andbeforeKingArthurandtheTableRound.”

           ThenwasSirMarhaustakenbacktoIrelandbyhiscompany;andassoonashearrivedhiswoundsweresearched,andwhentheysearchedhisheadtheyfoundthereinapieceofTristram’ssword;butalltheskillofsurgeonswasinvaintomoveitout.SoanonSirMarhausdied.

           Butthequeen,hissister,tookthepieceofsword-bladeandputitsafelyby,forshethoughtthatsomedayitmighthelphertorevengeherbrother’sdeath.

           Meanwhile,SirTristram,beingsorelywounded,satdownsoftlyonalittlemoundandbledpassingfast;andinthatevilcasewasfoundanonbyGovernaleandKingMark’sknights.Thentheygentlytookhimupandbroughthiminabargebacktotheland,andliftedhimintoabedwithinthecastle,andhadhiswoundsdressedcarefully.

           Butforagreatwhilehelaysorelysick,andwaslikelytohavediedofthefirststrokeSirMarhaushadgivenhimwiththespear,forthepointofitwaspoisoned.
