TherewasakingofLyonesse,namedMeliodas,marriedtothesisterofKingMarkofCornwall,arightfairladyandagood.AndsoithappenedthatKingMeliodashuntinginthewoodswastakenbyenchantmentandmadeprisonerinacastle.WhenhiswifeElizabethhearditshewasnighmadwithgrief,andranintotheforesttoseekoutherlord.Butaftermanydaysofwanderingandsorrowshefoundnotraceofhim,andlaidherdowninadeepvalleyandprayedtomeetherdeath.Andsoindeedshedid,butereshediedshegavebirthinthemidstofallhersorrowtoachild,aboy,andcalledhimwithherlatestbreathTristram;forshesaid,“Hisnameshallshowhowsadlyhehathcomeintothisworld.”
Therewithshegaveupherghost,andthegentlewomanwhowaswithhertookthechildandwrappeditfromthecoldaswellasshewasable,andlaydownwithitinherarmsbeneaththeshadowofatreehardby,expectingdeathtocometoherinturn.
Butshortlyaftercameacompanyoflordsandbaronsseekingforthequeen,andfoundtheladyandthechildandtookthemhome.AndonthenextdaycameKingMeliodas,whomMerlinhaddelivered,andwhenheheardofthequeen’sdeathhissorrowwasgreaterthantonguecantell.Andanonheburiedhersolemnlyandnobly,andcalledthechildTristramasshehaddesired.
