SoSirLancelotdeparted,andwhenhecametotheChapelPeriloushealighted,andtiedhishorsetothegate.Andassoonashewaswithinthechurchyard,hesawonthefrontofthechapelmanyshieldsofknightswhomhehadknown,turnedupsidedown.Thensawheinthepathwaythirtymightyknights,tallerthananymenwhomhehadeverseen,allarmedinblackarmour,withtheirswordsdrawn;andtheygnashedtheirteethuponhimashecame.Butheputhisshieldbeforehim,andtookhisswordinhand,readytodobattlewiththem.Andwhenhewouldhavecuthiswaythroughthem,theyscatteredoneverysideandlethimpass.Thenhewentintothechapel,andsawthereinnolightbutofadimlampburning.Thenhewasawareofacorpseinthemidstofthechapel,coveredwithasilkencloth,andsostoopeddownandcutoffapieceofthecloth,whereattheearthbeneathhimtrembled.Thensawheaswordlyingbythedeadknight,andtakingitinhishand,hehiedhimfromthechapel.Assoonashewasinthechurchyardagain,allthethirtyknightscriedouttohimwithfiercevoices,“SirLancelot!laythatswordfromthee,orthoudiest!”
“WhetherIliveordie,”saidhe,“yeshallfightforitereyetakeitfromme.”
