Paul’sChurch,andthearchbishopbesoughtHeavenforasignwhoshouldbelawfulkingofalltherealm.
Andastheyprayed,therewasseeninthechurchyard,setstraightbeforethedoorwaysofthechurch,ahugesquarestonehavinganakedswordstuckinthemidstofit.Andontheswordwaswritteninlettersofgold,“WhosopullethouttheswordfromthisstoneisborntherightfulKingofBritain.”
Atthisallthepeoplewonderedgreatly;and,whenMasswasover,thenobles,knights,andprincesranouteagerlyfromthechurchtoseethestoneandsword;andalawwasforthwithmadethatwhososhouldpullouttheswordshouldbeacknowledgedstraightwayKingofBritain.
Thenmanyknightsandbaronspulledattheswordwithalltheirmight,andsomeofthemtriedmanytimes,butnonecouldstirormoveit.
Whenallhadtriedinvain,thearchbishopdeclaredthemanwhomHeavenhadchosenwasnotyetthere.“ButGod,”saidhe,“willdoubtlessmakehimknowneremanydays.”
Sotenknightswerechosen,beingmenofhighrenown,towatchandkeepthesword;andtherewasproclamationmadethroughallthelandthatwhosoeverwould,hadleaveandlibertytotryandpullitfromthestone.Butthoughgreatmultitudesofpeoplecame,bothgentleandsimple,formanydays,nomancouldevermovetheswordahair’sbreadthfromitsplace.
Now,attheNewYear’sEveagreattournamentwastobeheldinLondon,whichthearchbishophaddevisedtokeeptogetherlordsandcommons,lesttheyshouldgrowestrangedinthetroublousandunsettledtimes.
