Thenreturningtothefield,KingArthurrodetotheplacewhereLuciuslaydead,androundhimthekingsofEgyptandEthiopia,andseventeenotherkings,withsixtyRomansenators,allnoblemen.Alltheseheorderedtobecarefullyembalmedwitharomaticgums,andlaidinleadencoffins,coveredwiththeirshieldsandarmsandbanners.Thencallingforthreesenatorswhoweretakenprisoners,hesaidtothem,“Astheransomofyourlives,IwillthatyetakethesedeadbodiesandcarrythemtoRome,andtherepresentthemforme,withtheseletterssayingIwillmyselfbeshortlythere.AndIsupposetheRomanswillbewarehowtheyagainasktributeofme;fortellthem,thesedeadbodiesthatIsendthemareforthetributetheyhavedaredtoaskofme;andiftheywishformore,whenIcomeIwillpaythemtherest.”
So,withthatcharge,thethreesenatorsdepartedwiththedeadbodies,andwenttoRome;thebodyoftheEmperorbeingcarriedinachariotblazonedwiththearmsoftheempire,allalone,andthebodiesofthekingstwoandtwoinchariotsfollowing.
Afterthebattle,KingArthurenteredLorraine,Brabant,andFlanders,andthence,subduingallthecountriesashewent,passedintoGermany,andsobeyondthemountainsintoLombardyandTuscany.Atlengthhecamebeforeacitywhichrefusedtoobeyhim,whereforehesatdownbeforeittobesiegeit.Andafteralongtimethusspent,KingArthurcalledSirFlorence,andtoldhimtheybegantolackfoodforhishosts—“Andnotfarfromhence,”saidhe,“aregreatforestsfullofcattlebelongingtomyenemies.
