Meanwhile,KingArthurhavingheldaparliamentatYork,lefttherealminchargeofSirBadewineandSirConstantine,andcrossedtheseafromSandwichtomeetLucius.Andsosoonashewaslanded,hesentSirGawain,SirBors,SirLionel,andSirBediveretotheEmperor,commandinghim“tomoveswiftlyandinhasteoutofhisland,and,ifnot,tomakehimselfreadyforbattle,andnotcontinueravagingthecountryandslayingharmlesspeople.”Anon,thosenobleknightsattiredthemselvesandsetforthonhorsebacktowheretheysaw,inameadow,manysilkententsofdiverscolours,andtheEmperor’spavilioninthemidst,withagoldeneaglesetaboveit.
ThenSirGawainandSirBorsrodeforward,leavingtheothertwobehindinambush,andgaveKingArthur’smessage.TowhichtheEmperorreplied,“Return,andtellyourlordthatIamcometoconquerhimandallhisland.”
Atthis,SirGawainburnedwithanger,andcriedout,“IhadratherthanallFrancethatImightfightwiththeealone!”
