ButallmenwhobeheldthemsaidtheyneversawaknightfighthalfsowellasdidKingArthur;andallthepeopleweresogrievedforhimthattheybesoughtSirDamasandSirOutzlaketomakeuptheirquarrelandsostaythefight;buttheywouldnot.
Sostillthebattleraged,tillArthurdrewalittlebackforbreathandafewmoments’rest;butAccoloncameonafterhim,followingfiercelyandcryingloud,“Itisnotimeformetosuffertheetorest,”andtherewithsetuponhim.ThenArthur,fullofscornandrage,lifteduphisswordandstruckSirAccolonuponthehelmsomightilythathedrovehimtohisknees;butwiththeforceofthatgreatstrokehisbrittle,treacherousswordbrokeshortoffatthehilt,andfelldowninthegrassamongtheblood,leavingthepommelonlyinhishand.Atthat,KingArthurthoughtwithinhimselfthatallwasover,andsecretlypreparedhismindfordeath,yetkepthimselfsoknightlyshelteredbyhisshieldthathelostnoground,andmadeasthoughheyethadhopeandcheer.ThensaidSirAccolon,“Sirknight,thounowartovercomeandcanstendurenolonger,seeingthouartweaponless,andhastlostalreadysomuchblood.YetamIfullylothtoslaythee;yield,then,therefore,tomeasrecreant.
