Thematterwasassumingamostamazingaspect,althoughinsomerespectsthelasttelegramwasarelieftotheauthoritiesatLiverpool.Ifanaccidenthadoccurredtothespecial,itseemedhardlypossiblethatthelocaltraincouldhavepasseddownthesamelinewithoutobservingit.Andyet,whatwasthealternative?Wherecouldthetrainbe?Haditpossiblybeensidetrackedforsomereasoninordertoallowtheslowertraintogopast?Suchanexplanationwaspossibleifsomesmallrepairhadtobeeffected.AtelegramwasdispatchedtoeachofthestationsbetweenSt.HelensandManchester,andthesuperintendentandtrafficmanagerwaitedintheutmostsuspenseattheinstrumentfortheseriesofreplieswhichwouldenablethemtosayforcertainwhathadbecomeofthemissingtrain.Theanswerscamebackintheorderofquestions,whichwastheorderofthestationsbeginningattheSt.Helensend—
