Hefollowedhisbusinessindustriouslyformanyyears,acquiredacompetence,andinthelatterpartofhislifeattainedtoadignifiedstationinthechurch,beingrememberedinrecordsandtraditionsasDeaconDrowne,thecarver.Oneofhisproductions,anIndianchief,gildedallover,stoodduringthebetterpartofacenturyonthecupolaoftheProvinceHouse,bedazzlingtheeyesofthosewholookedupward,likeanangelofthesun.Anotherworkofthegooddeacon’shand—areducedlikenessofhisfriendCaptainHunnewell,holdingatelescopeandquadrant—maybeseentothisday,atthecornerofBroadandStatestreets,servingintheusefulcapacityofsigntotheshopofanauticalinstrumentmaker.Weknownothowtoaccountfortheinferiorityofthisquaintoldfigure,ascomparedwiththerecordedexcellenceoftheOakenLady,unlessonthesuppositionthatineveryhumanspiritthereisimagination,sensibility,creativepower,genius,which,accordingtocircumstances,mayeitherbedevelopedinthisworld,orshroudedinamaskofdulnessuntilanotherstateofbeing.ToourfriendDrownetherecameabriefseasonofexcitement,kindledbylove.Itrenderedhimageniusforthatoneoccasion,but,quenchedindisappointment,lefthimagainthemechanicalcarverinwood,withoutthepowerevenofappreciatingtheworkthathisownhandshadwrought
