Buttherewasnothingverymiraculoustobeseen;nothing—exceptthetriflespreviouslynoticed—toconfirmtheideaofasupernaturalperilenvironingtheprettyPolly.Thestrangeritistruewasevidentlyathoroughandpractisedmanoftheworld,systematicandself-possessed,andthereforethesortofapersontowhomaparentoughtnottoconfideasimple,younggirlwithoutduewatchfulnessfortheresult.
