Butherewillbeanotherdisappointment;forwecanattemptnomorethanmerelytoassociateinonefraternityallwhoareafflictedwiththesamevaguetrouble.Somegreatmistakeinlifeisthechiefconditionofadmittanceintothisclass.Herearemembersofthelearnedprofessions,whomProvidenceendowedwithspecialgiftsfortheplough,theforge,andthewheelbarrow,orfortheroutineofunintellectualbusiness.Wewillassigntothem,aspartnersinthemarch,thoselowlylaborersandhandicraftsmen,whohavepined,aswithadyingthirst,aftertheunattainablefountainsofknowledge.Thelatterhavelostlessthantheircompanions;yetmore,becausetheydeemitinfinite.Perchancethetwospeciesofunfortunatesmaycomfortoneanother.HereareQuakerswiththeinstinctofbattleinthem;andmenofwarwhoshouldhavewornthebroadbrim.AuthorsshallberankedherewhomsomefreakofNature,makinggameofherpoorchildren,hadimbuedwiththeconfidenceofgeniusandstrongdesireoffame,buthasfavoredwithnocorrespondingpower;andothers,whoseloftygiftswereunaccompaniedwiththefacultyofexpression,oranyofthatearthlymachinerybywhichetherealendowmentsmustbemanifestedtomankind.Allthese,therefore,aremelancholylaughing-stocks.Next,herearehonestandwellintentionedpersons,whobyawantoftact—byinaccurateperceptions—byadistortingimagination—havebeenkeptcontinuallyatcrosspurposeswiththeworldandbewildereduponthepathoflife.Letusseeiftheycanconfinethemselveswithinthelineofourprocession.
