Attheendofthevalley,asJohnBunyanmentions,isacavern,where,inhisdays,dwelttwocruelgiants,PopeandPagan,whohadstrownthegroundabouttheirresidencewiththebonesofslaughteredpilgrims.Thesevileoldtroglodytesarenolongerthere;butintotheirdesertedcaveanotherterriblegianthasthrusthimself,andmakesithisbusinesstoseizeuponhonesttravellersandfattenthemforhistablewithplentifulmealsofsmoke,mist,moonshine,rawpotatoes,andsawdust.HeisaGermanbybirth,andiscalledGiantTranscendentalist;butastohisform,hisfeatures,hissubstance,andhisnaturegenerally,itisthechiefpeculiarityofthishugemiscreantthatneitherheforhimself,noranybodyforhim,haseverbeenabletodescribethem.Aswerushedbythecavern’smouthwecaughtahastyglimpseofhim,lookingsomewhatlikeanill-proportionedfigure,butconsiderablymorelikeaheapoffogandduskiness.
