EvenwhilewewerespeakingthetrainshotintotheentranceofthisdreadedValley.ThoughIpleadguiltytosomefoolishpalpitationsoftheheartduringourheadlongrushoverthecausewayhereconstructed,yetitwereunjusttowithholdthehighestencomiumsontheboldnessofitsoriginalconceptionandtheingenuityofthosewhoexecutedit.Itwasgratifying,likewise,toobservehowmuchcarehadbeentakentodispeltheeverlastinggloomandsupplythedefectofcheerfulsunshine,notarayofwhichhaseverpenetratedamongtheseawfulshadows.Forthispurpose,theinflammablegaswhichexudesplentifullyfromthesoiliscollectedbymeansofpipes,andthencecommunicatedtoaquadruplerowoflampsalongthewholeextentofthepassage.Thusaradiancehasbeencreatedevenoutofthefieryandsulphurouscursethatrestsforeveruponthevalley—aradiancehurtful,however,totheeyes,andsomewhatbewildering,asIdiscoveredbythechangeswhichitwroughtinthevisagesofmycompanions.
