           Theoldmanacceleratedhispace,sniffingeagerlyashenearedthefire.

           Theoldman’spalsiedeagernesswaspitiful. Sittingdowninthesandasquicklyashisstifflimbswouldlethim,hepokedalargerock-musselfromoutofthecoals. Theheathadforceditsshellsapart,andthemeat,salmon-colored,wasthoroughlycooked. Betweenthumbandforefinger,intremblinghaste,hecaughtthemorselandcarriedittohismouth. Butitwastoohot,andthenextmomentwasviolentlyejected. Theoldmansplutteredwiththepain,andtearsranoutofhiseyesanddownhischeeks. 

           Theboysweretruesavages,possessingonlythecruelhumorofthesavage. Tothemtheincidentwasexcruciatinglyfunny,andtheyburstintoloudlaughter. Hoo-Hoodancedupanddown,whileEdwinrolledgleefullyontheground. Theboywiththegoatscamerunningtojoininthefun. 

           “Set’emtocool,Edwin,set’emtocool,”theoldmanbesought,inthemidstofhisgrief,makingnoattempttowipeawaythetearsthatstillflowedfromhiseyes. “Andcoolacrab,Edwin,too. Youknowyourgrandsirelikescrabs.”
