“Ourprogresswaspainfullyslow. Thewomenandchildrencouldnotwalkfast. Theydidnotdreamofwalking,mygrandsons,inthewayallpeoplewalkto-day. Intruth,noneofusknewhowtowalk. ItwasnotuntilaftertheplaguethatIlearnedreallytowalk. Soitwasthatthepaceoftheslowestwasthepaceofall,forwedarednotseparateonaccountoftheprowlers. Therewerenotsomanynowofthesehumanbeastsofprey. Theplaguehadalreadywelldiminishedtheirnumbers,butenoughstilllivedtobeaconstantmenacetous. Manyofthebeautifulresidenceswereuntouchedbyfire,yetsmokingruinswereeverywhere. Theprowlers,too,seemedtohavegotovertheirinsensatedesiretoburn,anditwasmorerarelythatwesawhousesfreshlyonfire.
