Peopleslippedbysilently,furtively,likeghosts—white-facedwomencarryinginfantsintheirarms;fathersleadingchildrenbythehand;singly,andincouples,andinfamilies—allfleeingoutofthecityofdeath. Somecarriedsuppliesoffood,othersblanketsandvaluables,andthereweremanywhocarriednothing.
