“Yourememberwhenyourdadtaughtyoutoswim?” Theboynodded. “Well,intheUniversityofCalifornia—thatisthenamewehadforthehouses—wetaughtyoungmenandwomenhowtothink,justasIhavetaughtyounow,bysandandpebblesandshells,toknowhowmanypeoplelivedinthosedays. Therewasverymuchtoteach. Theyoungmenandwomenwetaughtwerecalledstudents. Wehadlargeroomsinwhichwetaught. Italkedtothem,fortyorfiftyatatime,justasIamtalkingtoyounow. Itoldthemaboutthebooksothermenhadwrittenbeforetheirtime,andeven,sometimes,intheirtime—”
“Wasthatallyoudid?—justtalk,talk,talk?”Hoo-Hoodemanded. “Whohuntedyourmeatforyou?andmilkedthegoats?andcaughtthefish?”

Isometimesthinkthemostwonderfulachievementofourtremendouscivilizationwasfood—itsinconceivableabundance,itsinfinitevariety,itsmarvellousdelicacy. Omygrandsons,lifewaslifeinthosedays,whenwehadsuchwonderfulthingstoeat.”
Thiswasbeyondtheboys,andtheyletitslipby,wordsandthoughts,asameresenilewanderinginthenarrative.
