           "Idid,"growledtheSawhorse,viciously."YouletDorothyalone,orI’llkickyouagain."

           "We’llseeaboutthat,"repliedtheKing,andatoncehewavedhishandtowardtheSawhorseandmutteredamagicalword."Aha!"hecontinued;"NOWletusseeyoumove,youwoodenmule!"

           ButinspiteofthemagictheSawhorsemoved;andhemovedsoquicklytowardtheKing,thatthefatlittlemancouldnotgetoutofhisway.Thump--BANG!camethewoodenheels,rightagainsthisroundbody,andtheKingflewintotheairandfellupontheheadofhiscaptain,wholethimdropflatupontheground.

           "Well,well!"saidtheKing,sittingupandlookingsurprised."Whydidn’tmymagicbeltwork,Iwonder?"

           "Thecreatureismadeofwood,"repliedthecaptain."Yourmagicwillnotworkonwood,youknow."

           "Ah,I’dforgottenthat,"saidtheKing,gettingupandlimpingtohisthrone."Verywell,letthegirlalone.Shecan’tescapeus,anyway."

           Thewarriors,whohadbeenratherconfusedbytheseincidents,nowformedtheirranksagain,andtheSawhorseprancedacrosstheroomtoDorothyandtookapositionbesidetheHungryTiger.

           AtthatmomentthedoorsthatledtothepalaceflewopenandthepeopleofEvandthepeopleofOzweredisclosedtoview.Theypaused,astonished,atsightofthewarriorsandtheangryNomeKing,seatedintheirmidst.

           "Surrender!"criedtheKing,inaloudvoice."Youaremyprisoners."

           "Go’long!"answeredBillina,fromtheScarecrow’sshoulder.
