ItwasamatterofchancethatIshouldhaverentedahouseinoneofthestrangestcommunitiesinNorthAmerica. IlivedatWestEgg, the—well,thelessfashionableofthetwo, thoughthisisamostsuperficialtagtoexpressthebizarreandnotalittlesinistercontrastbetweenthem. Myhousewasattheverytipoftheegg, onlyfiftyyardsfromtheSound,andsqueezedbetweentwohugeplacesthatrentedfortwelveorfifteenthousandaseason. Theoneonmyrightwasacolossalaffairbyanystandard—itwasafactualimitationofsomeHoteldeVilleinNormandy, withatowerononeside,spankingnewunderathinbeardofrawivy,andamarbleswimmingpool, andmorethanfortyacresoflawnandgarden. ItwasGatsby’smansion. Or,rather,asIdidn’tknowMr.Gatsby,itwasamansioninhabitedbyagentlemanofthatname.
