Afterfourteenmonths,herstomachcorruptedbymonkeymeatandsnakestew,Orsulagavebirthtoasonwhohadallofhisfeatureshuman.Shehadtraveledhalfofthetripinahammockthattwomencarriedontheirshoulders,becauseswellinghaddisfiguredherlegsandhervaricoseveinshadpuffeduplikebubbles.Althoughitwaspitifultoseethemwiththeirsunkenstomachsandlanguideyes,thechildrensurvivedthejourneybetterthantheirparents,andmostofthetimeitwasfunforthem.Onemorning,afteralmosttwoyearsofcrossing,theybecamethefirstmortalstoseethewesternslopesofthemountainrange.Fromthecloudysummittheysawtheimmenseaquaticexpanseofthegreatswampasitspreadouttowardtheothersideoftheworld.Buttheyneverfoundthesea.Onenight,afterseveralmonthsoflostwanderingthroughtheswamps,farawaynowfromthelastIndianstheyhadmetontheirway,theycampedonthebanksofastonyriverwhosewaterswerelikeatorrentoffrozenglass.Yearslater,duringthesecondcivilwar,ColonelAurelianoBuendfatriedtofollowthatsamerouteinordertotakeRiohachabysurpriseandaftersixdaysoftravelingheunderstoodthatitwasmadness.Nevertheless,thenightonwhichtheycampedbesidetheriver,hisfather’shosthadthelookofship-wreckedpeoplewithnoescape,buttheirnumberhadgrownduringthecrossingandtheywereallprepared(andtheysucceeded)todieofoldage.JoseArcadioBuendfadreamedthatnightthatrightthereanoisycitywithhouseshavingmirrorwailsroseup.Heaskedwhatcityitwasandtheyansweredhimwithanamethathehadneverheard,thathadnomeaningatall,butthathadasupernaturalechoinhisdream:Macondo.Onthefollowingdayheconvincedhismenthattheywouldneverfindthesea.
