           Thediscoveryofthegalleon,anindicationoftheproximityofthesea,brokeJoseArcadioBuendfa’sdrive.Heconsidereditatrickofhiswhimsicalfatetohavesearchedfortheseawithoutfindingit,atthecostofcountlesssacrificesandsuffering,andtohavefounditallofasuddenwithoutlookingforit,asifitlayacrosshispathlikeaninsurmountableobject.ManyyearslaterColonelAurelianoBuendfacrossedtheregionagain,whenitwasalreadyaregularmailroute,andtheonlypartoftheshiphefoundwasitsburned-outframeinthemidstofafieldofpoppies.Onlythen,convincedthatthestoryhadnotbeensomeproductofhisfather’simagination,didhewonderhowthegalleonhadbeenabletogetinlandtothatspot.ButJoseArcadioBuendfadidnotconcernhimselfwiththatwhenhefoundtheseaafteranotherfourdays’journeyfromthegalleon.Hisdreamsendedashefacedthatashen,foamy,dirtysea,whichhadnotmeritedtherisksandsacrificesoftheadventure.

           TheideaofapeninsularMacondoprevailedforalongtime,inspiredbythearbitrarymapthatJoseArcadioBuendfasketchedonhisreturnfromtheexpedition.Hedrewitinrage,evilly,exaggeratingthedifficultiesofcommunication,asiftopunishhimselffortheabsolutelackofsensewithwhichhehadchosentheplace."We’llnevergetanywhere,"helamentedtoOrsula."We’regoingtorotourlivesawayherewithoutreceivingthebenefitsofscience."Thatcertainty,mulledoverforseveralmonthsinthesmallroomheusedashislaboratory,broughthimtotheconceptionoftheplantomoveMaeondotoabetterplace.ButthattimeOrsulahadanticipatedhisfeverishdesigns.
