           Itwasfirstsupposedthatbymistaketheengineshadbeenslackened,butalmostatthesamemomentthatitwasfoundthatthiswasnotthecase,thediscoverywasmadethatthecrabaccompanyingtherepellerhadlaidholdofthestern-postoftheLenox,andwithallthestrengthofherpowerfulengineswasholdingherback.NowburstforthintheLenoxastormoffrenziedrage,suchaswasneverseenperhapsuponanyvesselsincevesselswerefirstbuilt.Fromthecommandertothestokerseveryheartwasfilledwithfuryattheinsultwhichwasputuponthem.Thecommanderroaredthroughhistrumpetthatifthatinfernalsea-beetlewerenotimmediatelyloosedfromhisshiphewouldfirstsinkherandthentherepeller.TotheseremarksthedirectoroftheSyndicate’svesselspaidnoattention,butproceededtostateasbrieflyandforciblyaspossiblethattheLenoxhadbeendetainedinorderthathemighthaveanopportunityofspeakingwithhercommander,andofinforminghimthathisactionincomingoutoftheharbourforthepurposeofattackingaBritishvesselwasindirectviolationofthecontractbetweentheUnitedStatesandtheSyndicatehavingchargeofthewar,andthatsuchactioncouldnotbeallowed.ThecommanderoftheLenoxpaidnomoreattentiontothesewordsthantheSyndicate’sdirectorhadgiventothosehehadspoken,butimmediatelycommencedaviolentattackuponthecrab.Itwasimpossibletobringanyofthelargegunstobearuponher,forshewasalmostunderthesternoftheLenox;buteverymeansofoffencewhichinfuriatedingenuitycouldsuggestwasusedagainstit.
